“My work is highly
architectural, with an emphasis on beautiful backgrounds,” says designer
Mark Epstein, who favors serene tailored interiors enlivened with a
richly muted palette. “Nature is filled with color and that is where I
draw inspiration.”
While studying environmental
design at Pratt, one of Epstein’s teachers was Joseph D’Urso, who became
an important influence on his design styles. Whether creating a fabulous
traditional Manhattan penthouse, or a casual seaside family retreat,
there is consistently a sense of restraint through Epstein’s interiors.
Completed projects include residences in Manhattan and the greater New
York area, the Hamptons, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Aspen and San
Francisco.
A 32 year veteran in the
design world, he has been published in several major publications such
as House & Garden, The New York Times, House Beautiful,
HC&G and other numerous trade publications and design books. Show
house rooms have included the Southampton Hospital Show House (two
years), the HC&G “Green” Idea House, the Guggenheim Castle Show
House in Sands Point and the Ronald McDonald House of New York City.
Epstein is also active in
various philanthropic works. He has chaired the UJA Design Dinner at the
Pierre, DIFFA Heartstrings’ Opening Gala in New York and has been a
board member of the Victory Fund and the Human Rights Campaign. He is
also on the design committee for the 2009 East Hampton Historical
Society Antique Show.
Presently Mark Epstein can
also be found splitting his time between his Manhattan and Water Mill
residences where he is at work on a lifestyle décor and entertaining
book.
